Building a Corporate Code of Conduct

Corporate Code of Conduct acts as a go-between in the many phases of work relationship such as those that exists among employers, unions, and laborers. Corporate code of conduct is entirely different from the “labor law”. Labor law defines the relationship between capital and labor. In the context of corporate code of conduct, there is no particular and empowered meaning that will solidly identify the official rulings of a certain corporation or company. This is because the code of conduct refers to the business guiding principles that characterize ethical paradigm for their employee’s conduct.

Action constitutes a person or an individual who is in control of himself and accountable to himself. This goes to show that what a person is and what becomes of him depend largely on the type of actions he performs during his lifetime. Hence, the corporate code of conduct is created to regulate these actions in conformity to what is deemed by the company as good and appropriate according to their ethical standards.

There is a great discrepancy in the ways the rules are stipulated in the corporate code of conduct. That is why the code of conduct is considered as entirely “voluntary.” However, there is no amount of law that can truly harmonize workers, unless the worker himself accepts that goodness and justice come from within him. The evil that people do comes from greed and malice. Conditions are based on the premise that people are creative in the sense that they possess tremendous bodily and spiritual powers. Every minute of their lives, they act, transforming their selves and the world around them.

A corporate code of conduct states that the rules created are wholly established within the context of a particular company or corporation

A corporate code of conduct is generally classified into three categories namely:

1. Corporate credos
These are the general rules of most corporations or business that are far-reaching in nature, and state the company’s obligation to the public or the community.

2. Compliance codes
These are the instructional rules that were stipulated to provide directions or regulations and forbidding particular types of behavior.

3. Management philosophy statements
These are the official statements of the business or corporation. These may also pertain to the CEO’s means of dealing with the clients and his employees.

All these three categories clearly define how corporate code of conduct can be created.

However, the mere creation and implementation of the corporate code of conduct do not guarantee the efficiency and usefulness of the codes. The corporate code of conduct must be founded within the context of integrity. It is only through complete understanding of the purpose of following the code of conduct that it is taken seriously and respected by the employees, consumers, and the government and the industry as a whole.

Consequently, integrity also depends on proper supervision, implementation, and precision of the codes. Hence, it can be deduced that corporate code of conduct is a conglomeration of the right implementation and integrity based on the requirements of the company, in which these things are fully recognizable for the development of the whole organization.
