Staff Code of Conduct: Just a Matter of Ethics

How many have cultivated personal friendships in the course of professional relations and more than once have accommodated personal requests from the powerful and influential people? This situation pertains to the growing problem in the professional world, particularly with those who seem to advance in their profession through unscrupulous means. This is the very reason why a staff code of conduct should be created and be set as a guideline for employer’s work ethics. The point here is that with the hard times getting harder and the tough jobs getting tougher, more and more people are doing the different unethical issues that are gradually becoming of great concern in the industry these days.

With all the issues coming up these days, everything had always been a question of ethics. This is because many people debate on whether certain things are considered unethical or punishable as stated under some provisions. Some people believed that it is possible to always see bad eggs in the industry because the employees or the staff members of any organizations are not unfeeling, unsociable robots trained to merely o their work. The point here is that employees are part of the industry that is sociable by nature.

Hence, everybody seemed to deduce to the fact that these unscrupulous staffs or employees can be subjective and biased. How can you condemn these people if the point of arguments is based on the context of how they have been good enough on their call of profession? For this reason, the staff code of conduct was deemed necessary in order to promote the goodness in people and implement the right ways on how to be ethically acceptable in the industry and the society.

Take for instance the issue on the case of mass media practitioners. There had been some ethical issues concerning their profession and the way some editorial staff have been involved in different activities that fall under the question of ethics.

A concrete example is in the mass media. Corruption has taken on a life of its own, it seems, but the persistent efforts of professionals to deal with it are indications that it is not yet too late and not all lost. Hobbled as it may be by lack of resources and increasing cynicism within its ranks, the mass media had demonstrated some commitment and progress in its efforts to clean up and restore its status as a credible guardian of the public good.

Therefore, they have revised, edited, and created new code of conduct for their staffs. In order to implement the right staff code of conduct, it must be incorporated into in-house training programs that would focus not only on skills, but also on ethics. Clinics with reporters could be held bimonthly, for example. These clinics could tackle the various problematic situations that the staff members have found themselves in. It could also provide ways on how they can exchange views about the ethical way of handling these situations.

The staff code of conduct says that ethics and how individual journalists conduct themselves, are, first and last, the individual’s call. But it takes a community of professionals, staff members, and companies living it out together, to make the staff code of conduct the genuine, positive, powerful norm and standard it should be for the industry.

Professionalism incorporated and stipulated in the staff code of conduct is the key to upgrading and enforcing ethical standards in the media.
