Meeting standards via compliance to ethical code of conduct

As an employee to the organization, one’s ethical standards are questioned every now and then. Where the individual is dealing with the customer, manager, team, juniors or top officials. Integrity and honesty play a major role in shaping up the career of an employee, and all other aspects like fair dealing, building a good reputation must be considered in a professional and an ethical conduct.

The ethical code of conduct applies to every single person who is active on the company’s payrolls. An ethical behavior on a large scale will include everything like ethical decision making, disclosure of personal thoughts, maintaining confidentiality, being fair to you, others and the company.

The personal judgment of individuals can always be tested by the company. However, if the staff is fully trained on ethical code of conduct they can bypass all obstacles. It is very commonly observed that at times the employee’s personal thoughts and ideas will have a major conflict with the managers and the company’s ethics. During such situations the employee can either flight the situation by leaving the job or fight back. Not with the system, but with his decision making abilities:

Listed below are a few pointers that must be carefully thought about before jumping to a conclusion: Everyone who is the dilemma must ask the following questions:

  • Is my decision more ethical that the one given down by the company?
  • Will my decision lead to legal complications?
  • Is it right to do what I have as a personal thought?
  • What if the management does not approve it?
  • Am I required to do something that is against my personal values?
  • Will I feel guilty of doing what the organization wants me to do?
  • What can be the implications if I do not follow what I am asked to do?
  • Do I have the support from anyone (may be an employee, or someone with the legal authority)?
  • Is there anyone who will get affected by my decision?

Based on the above questions, anyone who is in dilemma can arrive to a conclusion. At times the decision might be ethical as per the employees standards but not from the companies perspective. It could also be a possibility that it may not be a very popular one, but will be very satisfying.

So whenever an employee takes any decision, he must remember that he has an obligation towards society, the company, and customers; not to forget himself. So every ethical decision that he takes must be in favor of the organization and not against it, as long as the employee is working for it.

Implementation of ethical code of conduct:

  • Ethical code of conduct can be best implemented in cases when it is demonstrated by a top leader that the employees look upon as a role model.
  • It is can easily be instilled in the roots of the company if the ethics standards are made in favor of the employees. Which means the employees can benefit out of it.

It is easy for everyone to follow when it demands basic professional conduct form the employees.
